AUSTIN RESIDENCE

Austin Residence Renovation

Client: Jason and Angela Austin
Budget: $600K
Location: Washington, District of Columbia

Renovation of this approximately 5,600 SF four-story home in downtown Washington, DC was a complete interior demolition and upfit. The home was formerly an embassy for the county of Ghana. The design included a kitchen expansion, a second kitchen on the lower level, mud room, family room, office, five bedrooms, all new interior finishes, main stair relocation and reconfiguration, laundry room, and exercise room. Constructed of steel and 24″ concrete basement walls with brick veneer, the home is a landmark structure in the Brightwood Park Neighborhood.

Rollins RESIDENCE

Rollins Residence

Location: 145 Douglas Street, Atlanta, GA

Formerly part of the Kirkwood Plantation Estate, this circa 1906 farmhouse was doubled in size with a second floor to create 3,600 sf of living and family space for six and many years of memories. The existing home sat dormant and deteriorating in the Kirkwood Neighborhood in central Atlanta for many years. Our team worked closely with a local contractor to create an iconic home on Douglas Street. The scope included new family room, four bedrooms, open-plan kitchen, butler’s pantry and upstairs kid’s room. Phase 2 will include an expanded master suite with screen porch, free-standing garage with finished room above and an outdoor cooking kitchen and screen porch in the rear. As an addition to the project, MOTA created a treehouse design for the Rollins kids and their neighborhood friends.

Richland Library

Lower Richland Library

Client: Lower Richland Library
Budget: $230K
Location: 615 Lower Richland Blvd, Hopkins, SC

The project included an upfit of a 2,600 square foot storefront into a public library. Scope of work included a new floor plan, new finishes, rezoning of the HVAC, electrical systems, lighting, data network, plumbing, and safety and security. As the thirteenth Richland Library location and the first in the Lower Richland area, the project is a very important addition to the community and will have a lasting and beneficial effect on the needs of the residents within the area.

The Meeting Place Sanctuary

Client: The Meeting Place Church
Budget: $400K
Location: Columbia, SC 29223

Renovation of an existing 16,000 SF former retail center into a worship center. The uplift included an enlarged music and speaking platform, changing rooms, lobby and media engagement area, 620 seats, stadium seating for improved viewing, lighting and flooring enhancements, acoustical treatments and sound control center. Construction occurred during the COVID pandemic to provide a new experience for members upon their return to worship.

Saluda County

Saluda County School District One Renovations

Client: Saluda County School District
Budget: $1.3M
Location: Saluda, South Carolina

Saluda County School District was awarded $1 million as part of the Abbeville County School Settlement Funding. The school district applied for energy grants in the amount of $300 thousand for additional project support. With $1.3M in funding, the school district made plans to update HVAC units, resolve lighting/electrical issues, add additional restrooms as well as bring others up to code, replace windows, increase lobby security and update the fire alarm system throughout Saluda and Hollywood Elementary Schools. The district awarded the renovation and up fit work to W.E Baker & Son Construction and security enhancement work to BLAW Construction. We were able to complete all the projects within the  very strict funding timeline.

Saluda High School
& Middle School

Client: Saluda County Schools
Budget: $20-24M
Location: Saluda, SC

Recognizing the population growth in the county, Saluda County Schools selected Mota to help plan and design for expanding and renovating the Saluda Education Complex (high and middle school). The scope includes approximately 20,000 SF of CATE classroom/lab and multipurpose room additions along with interior renovations to accommodate new curriculum offerings.

Memorial Garden

Client: Greater Saint Luke Baptist Church
Budget: Estimated $300K
Location: Columbia, South Carolina

Greater Saint Luke Baptist Church aims to honor all former members with this memorial project.  In additional to dedicated brick pavers, this 40’x40’ circular monument features a perimeter brick column and iron fence, 7’ tall granite display panels with bronze name plates and a 13’ tall illuminated aluminum stylized cross. In addition to surround seating, the monument has cast aluminum donor placards, bollard lighting and lush landscaping. 

All-Star

All-Star Bowling Lanes

Client: Center for Creative Partnerships
Budget: Estimated  $5-7M (Phase 1 – $500K)
Location: Orangeburg, South Carolina

Although proud of all of our projects, Mota is exceptionally delighted to have been selected by The Center For Creative Partnerships to re-purpose this historic building and marque sign.  One of the sites that were part of the Orangeburg Massacre where Sammy Hammond, Delano Middleton and Henry Smith were shot and killed, this facility will undergo interior and exterior renovations to become a new bowling lanes, justice and cultural arts center.  Located on Russell Street in downtown Orangeburg, SC in an old strip shopping mall, the design includes a new multifunctional community room, student art displays, offices, historic bowling alley memorabilia displays, dining, gift shop, creative seating for discussion, board gaming and socializing, 15 rehabilitated bowling lanes and digital displays.  The facility intends to allow for cultural interactions, explorations, socializing and entertainment in a safe environment for all communities.

Chamberlayne

Chamberlayne Lofts

Budget: Estimated  $60M
Location: Richmond, VA

Working with a development team, MOTA is designing a 100-unit apartment home project in downtown Richmond, VA complete with a two level concrete parking structure and retail spaces. The project includes the adaptive reuse of an existing 24,000 SF,  two story masonry warehouse building conversion into parking and adding three stories of residential units above. In addition, a new five-story apartment tower with parking will be constructed immediately adjacent to the existing warehouse. Home units will range from 600 SF lofts, to 1250 SF 3BRs and include amenities such as a roof top garden, pet park, gym facilities, upper communal lounge and dining services.

Water Crest Dev.

Water Crest Development

Client: Water Crest Development
Budget: Estimated $60-80M
Location: Summerville, SC

Commissioned by the McDonald family from New York, Mota has been charged with developing a master plan for a 25-acre mixed-use commercial district in Summerville, SC. The design will include green space, club house/community building, splash pad, access to the Sawmill Branch Greenway, 200-300 multifamily living apartment homes and +/- 30,000 SF commercial retail center.

Woodard Unity Park


Location: Batesburg-Leesville, SC

Located in Bateburg-Leesville, South Carolina at the site of the former Batesburg Town Hall and Police Department, this park aims to right the wrong of the “Blinding of Sgt. Issac Woodard, Sr.” while continuing to unify the people of Batesburg and compliment the new Downtown Business District. A Historical Marker was dedicated in 2019 and there are efforts underway to have this site become part of the U.S. Civil Rights Trail.

MOTA is partnered with The LandPlan Group South to create a unique public space with landscaping, hardscaping, water elements, interpretive signage and other commemorative features that honor Sgt. Woodard, his story and how it influenced President Truman to integrate the U.S. Military. 

J.D Lever

J. D. Lever Elementary Multipurpose Building

Client: Aiken County School District 
Budget: $1.5-2M
Location: Aiken, SC

This 3,500 SF facility will compliment the existing campus, yet add to contemporary aesthetic as it encloses the existing playground courtyard.  Envisioned as a space for all types of group activities for the students, this building will feature exposed ceilings, large north facing windows that support daylighting strategies, equipment storage, rubber flooring and PE teacher’s office.  The brick veneer and metal clad building replaces an existing pre-manufactured portable structure.
